Calorific value (kWh/kg): the most important figure. It states how much usable energy is in each kilogram of briquette. High-quality briquettes range between 4.6 and 5.2 kWh/kg. Values below 4.5 kWh/kg indicate residual moisture or inferior raw materials.
Ash content (%): good wood briquettes burn cleanly. An ash content below 1.5 % is a sign of high-quality, untreated wood without foreign matter. Values above 3 % often result when wood residues with bark or other admixtures are processed.
Residual moisture: below 10 % is the guide value. Briquettes that are too damp burn incompletely, produce more soot and give off less heat.
Shape and density: stable briquettes that do not break apart in transit indicate even pressing. This is not an aesthetic criterion but a quality feature that directly affects burn time.
RED or BLUE: the basic distinction

Wood briquettes are produced in three common pressed shapes that differ in burning behaviour and handling.
RUF briquettes are block-shaped and stack well. They burn calmly and evenly with long-lasting embers. Well suited to continuous heating, less so to quick lighting. Their compact shape saves space in storage.
Nestro briquettes are round and have similar burning behaviour to RUF briquettes but are considered slightly more versatile. The cylindrical shape ensures good air circulation when burning.
PiniKay briquettes are fuel logs with a hole in the middle, either octagonal (Octagon) or square (Quadro). The draught hole is not a design feature but a technical detail: it improves air circulation and produces an intense flame. PiniKay briquettes ignite quickly and reach high temperatures.
