When the embers need to last until morning

Peat briquettes are made from dried, compressed peat and have been the fuel for stoves that need to burn through for generations. They ignite slowly, burn with a small flame and hold the embers considerably longer than wood – typically six to eight hours. The calorific value is around 5 kWh/kg; the ash content is higher than that of wood briquettes.

For which stoves? Peat briquettes belong in fireplaces approved for peat or coal according to the type plate: slow-combustion stoves, many tiled and workshop stoves, kitchen ranges. They must not be used in pure wood stoves (approval "logs and wood briquettes only") – a look at the type plate or a question to the chimney sweep clarifies this.

How to heat properly: build up a strong bed of embers with kindling and wood briquettes, then add peat briquettes and reduce the air supply. Peat needs little air and plenty of time.

Peat briquettes or wood briquettes?

Wood briquettes are the standard for wood stoves: high calorific value, very little ash, approved in every stove. Peat briquettes play to their strength where continuous burning matters – the stove should not go out overnight. Many users combine both: wood briquettes for warmth and flame in the evening, peat briquettes as the last load before going to bed.

Note: peat is a fossil fuel. Anyone who wants to heat climate-neutrally chooses wood pellets, wood briquettes and firewood from certified forestry.
